Day 13: Adults
Opportunities to serve

“What good is it my brother, if a man claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save him? Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to him, “Go, I wish you well, keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it? In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead” (James 2:14-17 NIV).

If the story of the Good Samaritan was written today, it probably would have different characters. The setting might be a light-traveled road. The first passer-by could be a deacon on her way to a committee meeting to decide a new color scheme for a Sunday School room. The second passer-by might be a minister on the way to a Spiritual Development lecture. Certainly, these two could not stop to help a stranded motorist! Or even an injured motorist. There is God’s work to be done.

But the third passer-by is a scruffy looking guy, maybe an immigrant, on his way to work at a new job. He stops, offers to help and calls for assistance.
So, at the end of the day who has the best score card? I know, thankfully, God does not keep a score card. But what if He did?
In these busy times, should we review the 166 hours we spend outside the walls of our favorite worship site? There may be opportunities to perform deeds, planned or unplanned.

Prayer:

“Father, please don’t let me become a 2 – 3 hour per week Christian. Keep me aware that You provide many ways to serve You throughout the week. In Jesus’ name I pray.” Amen.
