Sharing God’s Promises

Day 26 — September 16, 2018

By Dorothy Young

One of my favorite Bible verses is one that was passed on to me by a close friend and neighbor.  Many of you may remember her:  Judy Francis.  We were neighbors for almost ten years.  Our children played together; Judy and I enjoyed crafting and painting while our husbands enjoyed talking around the potbelly stove in Ray’s woodworking shop.  It was a great relationship for our families!

In 1977, Judy was diagnosed with leukemia.  For years she was a real trooper as she took care of her family and continued life as normally as possible.  Her condition finally sent her to Baptist Hospital in Winston Salem for treatment.   We helped with the family as much as possible and we visited and talked to her, hoping to make things easier.   During this time she would tell me about the comfort she received from her favorite scripture:  1 Peter 5:6-7  It is special indeed!!

Yes, she shared the verse that was an anchor for her and, over the years, it has been an anchor for me.

You see, the Lord made it possible that I would never forget this verse and what it meant to Judy, because there are several things in our house that constantly remind us of our special friendship.  A footstool that Ray made in his shop is in our kitchen and is used almost everyday.   A small green Christmas tree that is painted with descriptive words of the season that Judy and I made, is placed prominently in our home every year.

Judy passed away in 1984.  Several years ago her husband, Ray, also passed away, so now, we are even more appreciative of our keepsakes and reminders!

Isn’t it great that our God gives us memories that bring us joy,  and build the value-foundations that support who we are.  My friend Judy and her special verse is a foundation for me.

1 Peter 5:6-7 Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time: Casting all your care upon him; for He careth for you.
